Is It Any Wonder?

If you have been on the set of any kind film set location, then you know that repetition is a killer. Repetition is a necessary evil when shooting any kind of video. On location of the filming of this music video is no different. The upside, as a still photographer tasked with documentation, this offers the opportunity to get many more images than necessary, and even a few other non-work related images.

To maintain sanity on long days like this, goofing off eases tension, and helps keep you focused when it’s go time.

I Went To A Street Fair

The Alberta Street Fair!!! The day started out a little slow there, but things really picked up. I really enjoyed the music; Yo Momma on the Back Porch, The Davies, And And And, Jared Mees and the Grown Children, The Shaky Hands. Really just a fantastic time. All the homies showed up for the shows and I took a lot of pictures. Oh and the beer was great too!

Backspace. Good venue for music, nice room, great stage, good sound.
The bands And And And, Steel Wells, A. King, and Fanno Creek. It was a solid night of music.

PDX POP NOW is pretty much a block party in an industrial section of town. There are two stages, one indoors and the big one outdoors. Portland has the best music scene that I have ever experienced. Finding local acts to play is not a problem, because the talent pool has been stocked. Last night, I found the crowd to be a little pushy, more so than usual for a Portland crowd, but still very mellow compared to shows of this size I’ve been to in Denver New York, or Boston. There is tons of hype for this event, so it is pretty popular. A great turnout and the event is free, which is awesome. One of the interesting things about a big city is, you could pull this off. Boulder for example has Bands on the Bricks which garners great attention, but the bands that play are not exactly cutting edge. There is always a big crowd, but the crowd is older and lives in a pretty high tax bracket. But, Band on the bricks doesn’t lack organization. PDX POP NOW is run by volunteers, but there seems to be a little disorganization in regards to staff on the first day. I’m sure they have worked out the kinks for today’s show. The sound is decent but there is no direction for the people in attendance. There is no M.C. to let people know what’s happening or to dictate tempo. Instead you have a bunch of people standing around, which is fine I guess. The local culture being what it is..

The band I really went to go see was AND AND AND of course. A huge crowd came in for these guys. A very tame set in comparison to some past shows. Nathan informed me that the band wanted to tighten the songs up for this show. A result of that tightening was smoother, more orginized transitions between songs. A good set, which shows a maturing band. The question now, will their current followers approve of this change and can they win over fans, that were never into the mayhem that occurred on stage previously?

Who puts on a music festival in their own back yard? Mike does, that’s who. I’m not even sure how I even received an invite for this thing. I am hardly cool enough to be privy to such underground music events. There was food and a great outdoor stage. With a few good bands and some that I didn’t think were so good, but that didn’t matter at all, because I had more fun than I could have ever imagined.

Linda Hornbuckle at Cathedral Park

Today we had the Jazz Festival at Cathedral Park, which is not too far from my place.

Linda Hornbuckle was the act I caught today. I was completely floored by the show. The weather was awesome, the stage and sound system was fantastic. Linda, first of all has the pipes that just make you stand back and say WHOA.. She is an enormous talent, and her band has the precision of a fine Swiss watch. It was hard taking pictures, because I was enjoying the show so much.

I Love Shooting This Band

It’s just another quiet Wednesday night in the sleepy town of Portland, Oregon. That is until And And And has a show. Tonight they were the last band of a six band line up. I didn’t think anybody was going to be hanging out at Ella Street that late on a school night. Boy, oh boy was I wrong. It was a short set of about 45 minutes, but the loyal friends and followers really enjoy the band’s antics on stage. I suppose the antics are a real crowd pleaser, but the quality of the song writing and music coming from these six future superstars are what keep the fans coming back, even on school nights. It really seems as if the shows are getting crazier as each one goes by. The sextet is starting to really make a name for themselves in this town. I am certain it is just a matter of time when they make a name for themselves in other towns as well.

Three Bands on a Saturday Afternoon

When the weather is nice in Portland, there is always a place to see some music outside. Today was a day like that. Fantastic weather in St Johns for the No.Fest. Not a huge crowd of people, but the locals are always up for a good show. It is St Johns though, while everyone seems very polite, it’s not hard to feel like an outsider here. Someone once told me, “they’re more afraid of you than you are of them.”

The CD release show at Berbati’s Pan. What can say that won’t be said by everyone else at this show. Such a great time. As usual these guys are so much fun to photograph.

Last night I went to Berbati’s Pan to see and photograph the And And And show. Not really knowing the three other bands I wasn’t really planning to shoot those acts, These bands are definitely worth checking out.

And And And Play the Doug Fir

This was a pretty damn good show. I went and loaded in with the band and in return I was granted access to the band and back stage where most of the images were shot from.

The Venue itself was amazing, the sound was fantastic, no matter where you were seated. The place was super-clean and I didn’t feel like I needed a shower after leaving the place.

The two bands that followed And And And were also top notch acts. Fools Gold & Shadow Shadow Shade.

In all of the years of dealing with venue management and staff, the people at Doug Fir were as professional and helpful as I have ever seen. They care about the sound and the artist. I assume, if the artist is a prima donna then things may be different.

Well, I gotta say, I had a bad feeling about this place. The soundman one minute would give me a bad feeling, and the next minute he would seem perfectly normal.. Needless to say AND AND AND were kicked out of the venue before there set was even over. They were invited to play by another band, that band bailed on the show at the last minute.
